What Happens When I Call Spring Hill?
When you call Spring Hill, you will speak confidentially with one of our care specialists, who will ask you some general questions about your substance use and symptoms to help determine the next steps for you. They can also answer any questions you may have about the treatment process and verify your health insurance coverage.
If you would benefit from a more thorough assessment, one can be set up for you here at Spring Hill in Ashby, at our outpatient center in Quincy, MA, or at our sister facility in Canton, MA (Bedrock Recovery Center, which offers medical detox and then connection to Spring Hill once detox is completed). We can also provide a referral if another facility would be a better match for your particular needs.
Can I Drive Myself To Spring Hill?
Due to safety issues and other concerns, we don’t allow clients to drive themselves to Spring Hill. This policy is in place to help prevent people from attempting to drive while under the influence or when experiencing a crisis. If you need a ride to Spring Hill, we can help arrange one for you.
Likewise, we can help with transportation needs when you are ready to leave. For example, we provide rides to and from Boston Logan International Airport, local Greyhound stops, Union Station / Amtrak in Worcester, MA, and nearby cities. Please call to learn more about our transportation services.
What Should I Expect During My Assessment?
Your full assessment will take place shortly after your arrival at Spring Hill, giving you the opportunity to meet members of your care team and giving your care team the opportunity to learn about you, your treatment needs, and your recovery goals. A biopsychosocial assessment will be provided, involving questions about the biological, psychological, and social factors affecting your health, along with a medical exam. Your care team will work with you during this time to create an individualized treatment plan that addresses your unique care needs and recovery goals.
Can I Detox At Spring Hill?
Although we don’t provide detox services at Spring Hill, we can connect you with a nearby facility that does, such as our sister facility located just outside Boston, Bedrock Recovery Center. We can help ensure that the facility accepts your health insurance and also help arrange your transportation.
Spring Hill has been helping people recover from addiction for over a decade now, and in that time we have developed trusted relationships with local detox centers and pathways for a smooth, seamless transition to our facility once detox is completed. Our own medical staff provides ongoing monitoring, care, and support when you begin residential treatment here.
What If I’m Addicted To More Than One Substance?
Our addiction specialists can provide the care and support you need to recover from an addiction involving more than one substance. Polysubstance use disorders are on the rise, and our highly qualified team can determine which services you require both for stabilization if you are experiencing withdrawal symptoms and for long-term recovery. We offer evidence-based approaches, proven to be effective, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) options if one of the substances is alcohol or an opioid.
How Long Will My Treatment Program Last At Spring Hill?
Residential treatment programs at Spring Hill in Ashby generally last 30 to 60 days, varying based on individual need. We work closely with our clients to provide personalized care based on individual treatment needs, preferences, and goals and other personal factors for the best pathway to long-term recovery.
Outpatient programs at Spring Hill in Quincy also vary, with more intensive programs meeting more frequently and generally lasting between four and six weeks, and less intensive programs meeting less frequently and generally lasting between eight and 10 weeks.
Can Spring Hill Treat Co-Occurring Depression?
Yes, our staff is qualified to treat addiction and co-occurring depression or other co-occurring mental health disorders, also known as a dual diagnosis. Our team includes a double board-certified psychiatrist, a psychiatric nurse practitioner, and therapists who address both disorders at the same time. This approach is proven to be the most effective for recovery from a dual diagnosis.
What Is A Typical Day Like At Spring Hill?
A typical day at Spring Hill is focused on recovery-oriented activities but also includes opportunities for relaxation, reflection, and simply enjoying the beautiful surroundings on our over 70-acre campus. A typical day begins with a hot cup of coffee and a support group meeting, followed by a nutritious home-cooked breakfast.
The rest of the morning is dedicated to process groups, with fresh-air breaks in between sessions. After lunch, a longer break is provided, giving clients the opportunity to get out and enjoy Spring Hill’s walking paths, get in a workout, or enjoy personal time in other ways.
Group therapy sessions are scheduled until dinnertime, after which peer groups meet again to process the day’s events, usually ending with a short meditation. Fun social activities are scheduled in the evening, with additional time available for personal reflection, working out, etc., before lights out at 11 p.m.
Can I Work While Getting Treatment?
Although you won’t be able to work while getting treatment at Spring Hill, you will be assigned a case manager who can help ensure that you keep your job during treatment, such as by providing assistance with FMLA or similar paperwork.
We provide a full schedule of treatment and recovery-oriented activities every day so that you can make the most of your time at Spring Hill and focus on healing, developing healthy habits and coping skills, and achieving other recovery goals.
What Should I Pack?
Please plan to bring with you:
- A week’s worth of comfortable clothing, including items for layering
- A pair of gym shoes
- Any medications you’re currently taking
- Your health insurance card
- A photo ID
- The phone numbers of people you may want to include in your treatment, such as your spouse, other family, or a doctor
We do have laundry facilities, but we recommend bringing enough comfortable clothing for at least one week. Please also pack according to the season, as a variety of outdoor activities are available year-round. Clothing that is revealing or has drug, alcohol, or sexual themes is not permitted.
We provide all personal hygiene products for your convenience, along with your own shower caddy. You are welcome to bring your own personal hygiene products as long as they are sealed and do not contain alcohol.
Can I Bring My Cell Phone With Me?
You can bring your cell phone, but we will hold it for you and keep it locked with your other personal valuables. Cell phone use is determined on a case-by-case basis and is supervised. This policy helps Spring Hill provide a private, safe, recovery-focused environment for all clients.
Can I Bring My Dog?
Because of safety and other concerns involved, we cannot accommodate clients’ dogs, cats, or other companion animals during treatment. Options to consider for your dog’s care include asking a trusted family member or friend to dog sit and checking with your veterinarian to see if they provide dog-sitting services or work with trusted pet-sitters.
What Activities Are Available At Spring Hill?
We provide a wide range of wellness and recreation activities in support of your healing on our over 70-acre mountainside campus. This includes opportunities for socializing and having fun, like karaoke nights, movie nights, weekly bonfires, and more, plus opportunities for relaxation and personal reflection, like yoga, meditation, and arts and crafts. Exercise opportunities include participating in sports, working out in our gym, and walking the path on campus.

Can Spring Hill Help With Legal Concerns?
Yes, you can receive help at Spring Hill with legal issues through your assigned case manager and other team members. Our team is highly qualified in meeting a wide range of client support needs during treatment, including legal concerns, employment assistance, STD support, and more.
What Types Of Rooms Are Available?
Gender-separate rooms are available in Michael’s Building, our primary men’s residence, and in our three Poet’s Cottages, our primary women’s residences. Rooms are spacious, comfortable, and fully furnished, with forest views. Michael’s Building offers semi-private rooms, with a private room available when medical need necessitates, while the Poet’s Cottages feature private rooms.
What Are Meals Like At Spring Hill?
Meals are nutritious, freshly prepared by our onsite chef, and served in our cozy Barn Dining Hall. Our culinary team prepares meals three times a day, featuring a range of cuisines, local produce when available, hot and cold selections, and desserts with dinner. Dietary restrictions such as food allergies can be accommodated. The Barn Dining Hall features hardwood finishing throughout and outdoor decks for fresh-air breaks prior to or following meals.
Does Spring Hill Allow Visitors?
In lieu of visits, we provide other opportunities for family members and/or spouses to stay in touch and support your recovery, such as via phone calls scheduled through your primary clinician. Our family therapist on staff can also help you and your family resolve any unaddressed issues before you leave us. We also offer a five-week family education series via live Zoom sessions, helping your family understand what you’re experiencing and how best to support your recovery.
Is Smoking Allowed At Spring Hill?
Yes, we provide designated smoking areas outside where you can smoke or vape. Any nicotine products or vapes that you bring with you must be unopened and in their original packaging. Clients over the age of 21 can also order tobacco products weekly, using a credit or debit card for payment.
What Insurance Does Spring Hill Accept?
We accept most private health insurance plans and are in-network with Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, and other providers. We also accept TRICARE military insurance. Please call to take advantage of our fast, free health insurance verification service.
What If I Need Ongoing Support Following Treatment?
Aftercare planning is provided for every client at Spring Hill to ensure that the proper recovery support is set up before leaving us. For continuing treatment with your same care team, we provide outpatient programs at our Quincy, MA, location, as well as sober living options. We can help connect you with other “step down” care options as well as therapists and support groups in your area, employment resources, and more.
We also hope that you’ll consider joining our alumni program, which offers opportunities to stay connected with other people who have attended Spring Hill and are pursuing recovery. This includes invitations to sober activities in the area like holiday parties, bowling outings, and 5K runs, plus access to virtual peer support meetings and more.

How Can I Be Involved In My Loved One’s Treatment?
Thank you for asking! Having the support of family members and other loved ones can make all the difference in a person’s long-term recovery. We encourage family member and significant other involvement in a variety of ways, including through our popular five-week family education series, available via Zoom. Family therapy sessions offer another opportunity for families to find healing together. Phone calls may also be scheduled through our clinicians for offering additional support.
Can We Send Mail To Our Loved One?
Yes, you can send letters or packages to your loved one at Spring Hill. Please address them to your loved one care of Spring Hill Recovery Center. Note that all mail is opened by our staff before being delivered to clients to check for prohibited items, helping ensure that we continue to provide a safe, substance-free environment for everyone.
Prohibited items include:
- Aerosol products
- Blankets and pillows
- Cameras
- Candles or incense
- Food
- Opened, unsealed personal hygiene products (or any containing alcohol)
- Powders of any kind
